The Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund



The purpose of the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund is to provide scholarships to college and university undergraduates who have displayed both academic and athletic credentials during their high school careers, and who are in need of financial help to begin or continue their education at the college or university level.


The Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund was established with a donation of $25,000 in 1983 by the Cincinnati Reds as a tribute to Johnny’s illustrious 17-year career with the team.

  • Over 731 recipients have received grants through the 2016-17 school year totaling over $2,310,000, including 64 from Johnny’s home state of Oklahoma;

  • Currently there are 61 students receiving scholarships at 10 colleges and universities including 10 students from Binger, Oklahoma, Johnny’s home town;

  • There have been over 314 students graduate from college with financial assistance from the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund.

Scholarship Information

Recipients are chosen by the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund Advisory Board with the advice of the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation. The amount of each award is determined jointly by the Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund Advisory Board and the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, and shall be renewable at the beginning of each school year provided the recipient continues to meet all of the qualification requirements. The Johnny Bench Scholarship Fund is established with the Greater Cincinnati Foundation with Fifth Third Bank serving as Trustee.

Student-Athlete Qualifications

  • Be a resident of the Greater Cincinnati area (defined as the area within the boundary of Interstate 275) and be attending or planning to attend an accredited, non-proprietary college or university in the Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky area, Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, or be a resident of Johnny’s home town of Binger, Oklahoma, attending school in Oklahoma;

  • Maintain a 2.5 grade point average on a scale of 4.0 throughout his/her college or university career;

  • Have displayed both academic and athletic abilities during their high school careers;

  • Be enrolled or plan to enroll as a full-time student.

  • Fill out a Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation (CSF) application, submit it to the CSF, 602 Main St., Suite 1000, Cinti, OH 45202, and include a letter of recommendation from his/her high school or community coach from the sport in which he/she participated.

Contact the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, 602 Main Street, Suite 1000, Cincinnati, Ohio 45202, 345-6701, in downtown Cincinnati for an application, request one from a high school guidance counselor or find one on the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation’s web site, between January 21 and April 30 of each year.
